Barnsley’s last away game of the 2010/11 nPower Championship season was one of the shortest journeys of the season as the Reds took on Sheffield United at Bramall Lane. A game against a local rival is always one to look forward to however the fact nothing less than a win would do for the Blades in their relegation fight added to the atmosphere of the occasion. Barnsley travel to Watford today with the end to an interesting season just around the corner. The Hornets do have an outside chance of sneaking into the play-offs although surely even the most optimistic of Watford fans would admit that it is unlikely.
The Reds have settled in mid-table with nothing really to play for, however this seems to have sparked something of a revival in performances which should lead to an interesting encounter as Barnsley play with freedom and little pressure against a team which will have manager Malky Mackay putting pressure on them to finish as close to the play-off positions as possible. Mark Robins has said several times that he wants Barnsley to push on and “smash” their points tally from previous years to provide momentum going into next season. Recent results would suggest that the team haven’t really responded to this with form remaining distinctly average with the players probably believing a play-off push was a step too far, and relegation never a real threat.
