Columbian goalkeeper David Gonzalez signs on non-contract terms

With Ben Alnwick suspended following his red card against Rochdale, and the long-term injury to Luke Steele, Keith Hill has been busy trying to bring a new goalkeeper to Oakwell on a short-term basis.

The Barnsley manager had agreed a deal with Tony Pulis and Stoke City to bring in the experienced Carlo Nash to Oakwell, however Stoke wanted to have the option to recall the player early in September – this suited Keith Hill however Football League rules apparently would not allow this which meant the deal could not go ahead. Jacob Butterfield Latest

It’s turned into one of the longest running Oakwell sagas – will Jacob Butterfield sign a new contract with Barnsley or be tempted away by what are sure to be better offers for him financially.

A supposed deadline set by Barnsley for Jacob to make a decision has come and gone however Keith Hill is still open to keeping hold of a player who he has described as “the best midfielder in the Championship”. (more…)

Barnsley miss out on Norwood

After announcing interest in Oliver Norwood at the end of last season, Keith Hill has failed to persuade to the midfielder to join him at Oakwell.

A £400,000 fee was agreed with Norwood’s previous club, Manchester United, however Huddersfield Town boss Simon Grayson decided to match Barnsley’s offer and the player ultimately chose to continue his career at the Galpharm Stadium where it is believed the financial package offered to him was somewhat better than the chiefs at Oakwell were prepared to offer. Hassell wants the armband

Bobby Hassell has sent a message to Keith Hill via the media suggesting that he wants to be Barnsley’s captain following the departure of last season’s skipper Jason Shackell, “It would be an honour if I was asked to be the Barnsley captain, it would make me very proud if I got that opportunity.”  (more…)

Hill targets Bournemouth defender Jason Pearce as Shackell looks set to depart

After signing a striker and a midfielder, Keith Hill is now looking to add a defender to the Barnsley squad.  Several sources have named Bournemouth‘s 6ft 2″ defender Jason Pearce as just the man, however the Reds face competition from a number of clubs including Ipswich, Burnley and newly-promoted Peterborough. Noble-Lazarus signs on for two years

Promising Barnsley youngster Reuben Noble-Lazarus has signed a new two-year contract with Reds.  The young striker/midfielder made his debut under Simon Davey aged just 15 years and 45 days old – a football league record – however his first team opportunities have been limited since then with Mark Robins involving him in several games towards the end of the 2010/11 season.  Robins himself even intimated that Davey had perhaps brought him into the senior side too early.
