Not even a minute had elapsed when QPR’s dangerous attacking midfielder Adel Taarabt gave the away side the lead at Oakwell, but after that it was a true ‘backs to the wall’ display from the league leaders as Barnsley did everything apart from get the ball in the net.
Paddy Kenny had to be at his best on several occasions as the likes of Gray and Harewood went close. Jacob Butterfield, full of confidence after his terrific goal on Saturday, also went close but his shot hit the post just a few minutes from the end of the game.
While QPR continued to have chances, mainly through the impressive Taarabt, Barnsley controlled almost all of the game but were unable to break down a defence which has conceded only fifteen away goals all season.
Mark Robins was understandably pleased with the teams performance yet frustrated with the result as the Reds will not play like this too many more times and get nothing from a game. Rangers brought a commendable away following to Oakwell considering it was an evening game so far away from Loftus Road, and they were relieved at the final whistle to see that their team had hung on for a win despite being second best for over an hour and a half.
It was refreshing to see the Barnsley manager giving youth a chance towards the end of the game – Jordan Clarke made his league debut when he replaced Jacob Mellis with around 15 minutes to go. Ruben Noble-Lazarus was also given a slightly longer cameo than on Saturday when he replaced Andy Gray for the final ten minutes.
